Cold fronts are bodies of air with cooler temperatures than the surrounding air. The general effect cold fronts have is that they cause a drastic change in the weather. This is because when they interact with the warmer air, they produce precipitation.
The storm most likely, came with an advancing mass of cold air, which caused the dramatic drop in temperature that was experienced. This is what is known as a cold front.
