Hannah and her sidekick, Avery, went out on the town in Manhattan one evening, to a swanky restaurant. Hannah and Avery saw a ne

w food item on the menu (Fois Gras, which is seared goose liver), and decided to try it. Avery found it delicious, as did Hannah. After retiring to bed that night, Avery became nauseous, had a headache, and slept poorly. Avery has tried eating fois gras since then, but when looking at it, she immediately feels nauseous and can't eat it. (hint: Food aversion is a special case of classical conditioning which requires only one pairing of the stimuli)

Answer:

Unconditioned Stimulus: Eating fois gras

Unconditioned Response: Nausea

Neutral Stimulus/Conditioned Stimulus: Seeing or thinking about fois gras

Conditioned Response: Nausea

Explanation:

Taste Aversion happens when a specific type of food causes a person to feel sick even if that particular dish was not even the reason why that person felt those horrible symptoms. However, classic conditioning occurs and said person will associate those symptoms to that particular food from that point on. Just like Pavlov's dog would salivate when the bell rang, so will the person will feel sick everytime they see or think about the food that made them sick.
