You have to distribute the number outside the parenthesis to the numbers in the parenthesis, so basically 0.5 x 2a and 0.5 x -3 and for the other side 0.4 x 6 and 0.4 x 2a.
You will get:
a - 1.5 - 0.1 = 2.4 + 0.8a
Simplify:
a - 1.6 (because negative minus a number decreases the number)

Equation:
a - 1.6 = 2.4 + 0.8a
Subtract 0.8a from both sides.

0.2a - 1.6 = 2.4
Add 1.6 to both sides.

0.2a = 4
Divide by 0.2 (or as a fraction 1/5)
4/0.2 or 4/1/5 which is 4 x 5 because dividing a fraction is multiplying the reciprocal.

a = 20

Answer:

The end result is -1/(x + 1)

Step-by-step explanation:

In order to find the answer to this, we first need to factor the denominator. Since it is a quadratic, we try to find number that multiply to the last term (8) and add to the middle term (9). In this case, the numbers 8 and 1 would work. This allows us to use those numbers in parenthesis along with x as a fully factored form.

x^2 + 9x + 8 = (x + 1)(x + 8)

Now that we have this factored we can take the original equation and factor a -1 out of the top.

(-1)(x + 8)/(x + 1)(x + 8)

Since there is an (x + 8) on the top and bottom, we can cancel those.

-1/(x + 1)

A jar holds 128 fluid ounces of juice. The label says the jar has 16 servings. How many fluid ounces are needed for 80 servings?
Bumek [7]
There are 16 servings for each 128 fluid ounces of juice.

Divide 80 servings by 16 servings, and 5 should be the quotient. Therefore, there are 5 jars of juice. Multiply 128 by 5 since 128 fluid ounces are in one jar. The answer should be 640 fluid ounces.
