During most of the time that Shakespeare lived (1564-1616), Queen Elizabeth was the queen of England. During her reign, England saw the flourishing of other great authors, such as Marlowe. These artists are often referred to as Elizabethan dramatists, and, following in the genius of Shakespeare, they make up the literary branch of the English Renaissance. Queen Elizabeth was indeed a great patron of Shakespeare´s works.
