If you're asking for a personal opinion, I see why not. Being paid for having good grades is almost identical to having a job. Good performance results in being paid, while bad performance results in nothing. In a way, students are paid for good grades already if you take into account the fact that one can earn a scholarship from having perfect performance.
irony is because the readers would assume that the kid would be scared and the kidnappers would be okay with what they're doing. it was the opposite. the kid didn't want to go back home, and the kid nappers were annoyed with the kid.
