The purpose of the Tennessee Valley Authority (1933) was to modernize the rural Tennessee River Valley 's economy and society which was one of the regions most affected and impoverished by the Great Depression. The corporation aimed to accomplish this by bringing electricity to the region, operating the hydroelectric Wilson Dam, improving the navigability of the Tennessee River, providing flood control through reforestation of marginal lands in the Tennessee Valley watershed, by developing agriculture, commerce and industry and by making plans and taking actions for the construction of dams, reservoirs, and power plants.
