Habeas corpus is Latin for "that you have the body," and refers to a petition to bring a person under arrest into court, usually to decide whether or not the detention was lawful. The writ of habeas corpus can be used by federal courts to decide if a prisoner´s detention is legitimate, but also to review extradition processes, or to question the bail or jurisdiction of the court.
