The cataclysmic earthquake of 1692 largely destroyed Port Royal, Jamaica, sinking most of the city below sea level. Approximately 2,000 people died at the earthquake , and about 3,000 more died during the following days due to disease. The high amount of dead people at the disaster was due to a tsunami that followed the earthquake.
