The early women's rights movement built upon the principles and experiences of other efforts to promote social justice and to improve the human condition. Collectively these efforts are known as reform. Among these were the Abolition and Temperance movements.The personal and historical relationships that came together, and at times split apart the movement for women's rights existed before 1848, have progressed over the subsequent century and a half.

Both the movements for the abolition of slavery and for women’s rights were powerful expressions of nineteenth-century Protestant moral reform. A few Christians raised protests against slavery prior to the Revolution, but many more began to question its compatibility with Christianity in light of the Enlightenment ideals enshrined in the Declaration of Independence. Early antislavery advocates began to call for gradual emancipation, sometimes linking emancipation to the repatriation of slaves to Africa. Strong critics like Daniel Walker sounded a more prophetic note with denunciations of the hypocrisy of American Christianity.
