Can someone explain Matthew 18:9? 18:9 "And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for
Julli [10]
This verse means that if there is something in a person's life that causes the person to sin or sway from the will of God, the person should let it go, even if it seems difficult. The difficulty or the pain in letting go of that sin is what is compared to gouging the eye out and throwing it away. It will be very painful to gouge out your eye. So it is better to let go of that sin which is so pleasing, suffer on earth for a short time and enjoy in heaven eternally than to stay in that sin, enjoy on earth for a short time and burn in hell eternally.

Wilmot proviso pro slavery or anti slavery and why
koban [17]
Anti slavery because it wanted to ban slavery in the new land from the Mexican cession (i.e. the land the US acquired from the Mexican American War). However, it did not become law because not enough of congress approved probably because it was too progressive and anti slavery for the time. It went against the Missouri compromise (i.e. a law that banned slavery above a certain longitude and allowed slavery below that longitude) since a good portion of the Mexican extended below the slavery longitude. Also, many southerners wanted to expand slavery into the new territory for both economic and political reasons.
