Kelly has $20000 to invest, and hopes to earn $1390 in interest in the first year. She wants her investment in treasury bills to

be $3000 more than her investment in corporate bonds. The expected return (in simple interest) on each investment are: Treasury Bills: 5%, Treasury Bonds: 7%, Corporate Bonds: 10%. How much should Kelly invest in each one?

Answer:

$8,000 in Treasury bills

$7,000 in Treasury bonds

$5,000 in corporate bonds

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the amount to be invested in treasury bills be $x , the amount to be invested in treasury bonds be $y

From the question, we understand that the amount she will invest in corporate bonds will be $3000 less than the amount in treasury bills;

So mathematically, this will be $(x - 3000)

So therefore, the amount invested in each will be;

x + y + x-3000 = 20,000

2x + y = 20,000 + 3000

2x + y = 23,000 ••••••••(i)

Let’s now work with the simple interests;

For treasury bills;

5% = 5/100 * x = 5x/100

For Corporate bonds ;

10% = 10/100 * (x -3000) = (x-3000)/10

For Treasury bonds 7%

7% = 7/100 * y = 7y/100

Adding all gives the total interest;

5x/100 + 7y/100 + (x-3000)/10 = 1390

Multiply through by 100

5x + 7y + 10(x-3000) = 1390 * 100

5x + 7y + 10(x-3000) = 139,000

5x + 7y + 10x -30,000 = 139,000

15x + 7y = 139,000 + 30,000

15x + 7y = 169,000 •••••••••(ii)

So we have two equations to solve simultaneously;

From i, y = 23,000 - 2x

Put this into ii

15x + 7(23,000 -2x) = 169,000

15x + 161,000 - 14x = 169,000

x + 161,000 = 169,000

x = 169,000 - 161,000

x = $8,000

y = 23,000 - 2x

y = 23,000 - 2(8,000)

= 23,000 - 16,000 = $7,000

So the last investment amount is x-3000 = 8,000 -3,000 = $5,000

# [4-5{1-(4-3+1)}] of 100% equals <br><br> a) 50%<br> b)-1%<br> c)zero<br> d)100%
Nikitich [7]

<u>Answer:</u>

To solve this, we need to first evaluate the given expression. We can do that by simplifying the contents of each bracket, starting with the innermost one:

[4-5{1-(4-3+1)}]

⇒ [4 - 5{1 - (2)}]

⇒ [4 - 5{-1}]

⇒ 4 - (-5)

⇒ 4 + 5

⇒ 9

Now we can calculate what 9 out of 100 is:

9 of 100  =  \frac{9}{100}

              ⇒  9%

The function y
Sati [7]
We would have to know the exact y coordinates at -3 and -1, then you would find the slope between these two points and that would be the average slope between -3 and 1

Answer:

  A) (20 miles)/(1 gallon) = 20 miles per gallon

  B) 20/1 = 20

Step-by-step explanation:

After you read the problem statement and identify the questions being asked, it is a good idea to look carefully at the given information. Graphs A and B are identical in every way.

The vertical axis is labeled "y" and "Distance (miles)". The horizontal axis is labeled "x" and "Gallons". The graph starts at (0 gallons, 0 miles) and goes through points on the grid that are 2 squares up for each 1 square to the right. Each square up represents 10 miles. Each square to the right represents 1 gallon.

__

A) Pick two points on the graph. It is usually convenient to choose points where the graph crosses grid intersections. It is often convenient to choose one of them as (0, 0) if that point is on the graph (it is). I expect it to be convenient to choose the second point as (1 gallon, 20 miles).

The change in <em>distance</em> between the point (0 gallons, 0 miles) and (1 gallon, 20 miles) is (20 miles) - (0 miles) = 20 miles.

The change in <em>gallons</em> between the point (0 gallons, 0 miles) and (1 gallon, 20 miles) is (1 gallon) - (0 gallons) = 1 gallon.

The ratio of these changes is (20 miles)/(1 gallon) = 20 miles per gallon.

__

B) We can use the same two points. Here, we basically ignore the units.

Change in y = 20-0 = 20.

Change in x = 1 -0 = 1.

Slope = 20/1 = 20.

_____

<em>Additional comment</em>

For many problems, I find it convenient to keep the units with the numbers. Making sure the units work out properly is called "units analysis." Doing that can save you from a number of mistakes where units are involved.

Units can be treated just like a variable--multiplied, divided, raised to a power, cancelled from fractions. And, like with variables, terms can only be added or subtracted if they have the same units.

Here, we have ...

  \dfrac{\text{change in distance}}{\text{change in gallons}}=\dfrac{20\text{ miles}}{1\text{ gallon}}=\dfrac{20}{1}\times\dfrac{\text{miles}}{\text{gallon}}=20\text{ miles per gallon}

Note that "divided by" and "per" mean essentially the same thing in this context.

As you can see from the work done with Graph A, the slope of the line has units that are the ratio of the units of the y-axis to the units of the x-axis. (miles/gallon) Even though in Graph B, we write the slope as 20 without any units, it will only make any sense to use that number where units of miles/gallon make sense.
