The radioisotope used as a diagnostic tool to measure thyroid function is I-131. (Iodine -131).
A thyroid scan is a type of nuclear imaging which involves radiocative iodine uptake test which is a measurement of thyroid function, but does not involve imaging. A radioactive iodine uptake is used to determine the size, shape and position of the thyroid gland.
