During Puritanism, colonial writers produced non-fiction hymns, histories, poems, sermons and biographies with a religious focus and a simple style of writing. On the other hand, explorers like Columbus kept journals, narratives and letters to gain admiration and respect by the people back home upon their return.
The explorers and the Puritans were the two main groups during the colonial period. Therefore, the writers during this time can be divided into those two groups. A famous Puritan writer is John Milton who is famous for his piece "Paradise Lost."
