Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters are hiding evidence from the men. The women have evidence that prove that Mrs Wright murdered her husband and they want to protect Mrs Wright. When the stage directions tell us that "<em>the women draw nearer"</em> we can assume they felt empathy for Minnie.
