Its territories included the present-day United States of New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Connecticut. There were also some small outposts in Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

The Dutch colony was established in 1621 in order to capitalize on North American fur trade. It expanded rapidly and became a major port for trade in the North Atlantic Ocean.

At the time of its transfer to England in 1674, the colony had an estimated population of 8,000 people.
