In act 1, Shakespeare uses the images of light and dark to <em>create contrasts between characters, families, concepts, and emotions.</em> In Romeo and Juliet, he portrays Juliet as the light. This light shows best in darkness, this is where the contrast of Romeo and Juliet come in, both fills the darkness of each other by bringing light to their lives.
