The film-like substance that is formed from the acid that results from the combination of food sugars and bacteria on the surface of the tooth is known as dental plaque. At first it's colorless, but if it's not cleaned and removed properly it can turn into <u>tartar</u>. Tartar is thicker and can really harm the teeth. Dental plaque is commonly found between the teeth, on the front, behind them near the gum line and in chewing surfaces. It is important to remove plaque regularly by keeping the teeth clean in order to prevent problems such as caries, gingivitis, periodontitis among others.
