The Declaration of Independence is mostly composed of grievances (complaints for unfair treatment) against King George III and the British Parliament, who had passed the Intolerable Acts (1774) after the Boston Tea Party (the colonists threw all the tea they had produced into the Boston Harbor in response to unfair British taxation). As part of these acts, the British Parliament punished the colonies by forbiding them to trade with any other nation (France or Spain, for example). This policy was meant to make Britain wealthier.
