Why might indirect democracy be better for a large population
alexira [117]

Every day, the US Congress makes thousands of decisions.

In a direct Democracy, the citizenry would need to all be involved in each of these decisions. There are so many, that it would basically turn into a full time job for all citizens.

So, to allow for the majority of people to engage in trade or commerce, indirect democracy allows the election of representatives who act on behalf of the citizenry.

Based on the evidence in this article, what aspects of the ottoman empire in 1750 seem unique, and what aspects seem to be part
Eva8 [605]

The wealthy could become impoverished or the commoners in Ottoman Empire society could become wealthy. The foundation of the society was meritocracy.

The fact that women depend on males for their financial security and social status, on the other hand, seems to fit into a larger global pattern.

Between the 14th and the early 20th centuries, the Ottoman Empire, commonly referred to as the Turkish Empire, ruled over a large portion of Southeast Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa.

The Turkoman tribe chief Osman established it around the end of the 13th century in the town of Söüt (present-day Bilecik Province) in northwest Anatolia.

The Turkish Empire also owes its accomplishments to the exceptional leadership of Osman I, Orhan, Murad I, and Bayezid I, as well as to its centralised organisation, responsible government, continuously increasing territory, command of trade routes, and organised fearless military strength.

Through their religious convictions, a mechanism to accommodate non-Muslim residents, harsh responses to renegade or dishonest local authorities, and upholding a concentrated base of authority, the Ottomans were able to keep control over their empire.
