I believe that element is called flying buttresses.
Flying buttresses support the walls of a building and given that they are quite slanted, they seem as if they are forming an arch with that particular wall they are leaned against. I've attached an image of them for you to  see what I mean.

What are some of the inconsistencies depicted in Entombment?
anyanavicka [17]
There are many paintings showing “The Entombment” in Western Art, all based upon narratives in the Gospels. Since there are four different accounts in the New Testament of the burial of Jesus (by Mark, Matthew, Luke, John), artists often combined details from more than one account. What is usually inconsistent with the biblical accounts are elements such as the dress of the protagonists, the landscape or other setting, and the design of the tomb.
Often this event is represented by artists as if it were taking place in their own country/locale. This transforms the scene from some old historical event to something that people can imagine, similar to the way we experience things in movies, where everything is designed to make us believe what is happening and feel the appropriate emotions ourselves.
Artists often took liberties to intensity the emotional response of spectators. While such details are often historically inconsistent, they evoked responses that were true to the meaning of the event in the Catholic religion.i hope that i helped you
