What is the solution set of 2x(x - 1) = 3?

Mathematics
1 answer:
garik1379 [7]2 years ago
8 0

First you must distribute the 2x to the numbers inside the parentheses

(2x * x) + (2x * -1) = 3

2x^{2} - 2x = 3

To make this a quadratic equation you can solve bring the 3 over to the left side of the equation by subtracting it to both sides

2x^{2} - 2x - 3 = 0

Use the quadratic equation to solve this (image of the quadratic equation is below)

Remember that quadratic functions are set up like so:

ax^{2} +bx +c = 0

That means that in this equation...

a = 2

b = -2

c = -3

^^^Plug these numbers into the quadratic equation and solve...

\frac{2+/-\sqrt{(-2)^{2}-4(2)(-3)}}{2(2)}

\frac{2 +/-\sqrt{4+24}}{4}

\frac{2+/-\sqrt{28} }{4}

\frac{2+/-2\sqrt{7} }{4}

\frac{1+/-\sqrt{7} }{2}

Keep in mind that +/- is ±

\frac{1+\sqrt{7} }{2}

\frac{1-\sqrt{7} }{2}

^^^Exact answers

Approximations:

1.823

-0.823

Hope this helped!

find the centre and radius of the following Cycles 9 x square + 9 y square +27 x + 12 y + 19 equals 0
Citrus2011 [14]

Answer:

Radius: r =\frac{\sqrt {21}}{6}

Center = (-\frac{3}{2}, -\frac{2}{3})

Step-by-step explanation:

Given

9x^2 + 9y^2 + 27x + 12y + 19 = 0

Solving (a): The radius of the circle

First, we express the equation as:

(x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2 = r^2

Where

r = radius

(h,k) =center

So, we have:

9x^2 + 9y^2 + 27x + 12y + 19 = 0

Divide through by 9

x^2 + y^2 + 3x + \frac{12}{9}y + \frac{19}{9} = 0

Rewrite as:

x^2  + 3x + y^2+ \frac{12}{9}y =- \frac{19}{9}

Group the expression into 2

[x^2  + 3x] + [y^2+ \frac{12}{9}y] =- \frac{19}{9}

[x^2  + 3x] + [y^2+ \frac{4}{3}y] =- \frac{19}{9}

Next, we complete the square on each group.

For [x^2  + 3x]

1: Divide the coefficient\ of\ x\ by\ 2

2: Take the square\ of\ the\ division

3: Add this square\ to\ both\ sides\ of\ the\ equation.

So, we have:

[x^2  + 3x] + [y^2+ \frac{4}{3}y] =- \frac{19}{9}

[x^2  + 3x + (\frac{3}{2})^2] + [y^2+ \frac{4}{3}y] =- \frac{19}{9}+ (\frac{3}{2})^2

Factorize

[x + \frac{3}{2}]^2+ [y^2+ \frac{4}{3}y] =- \frac{19}{9}+ (\frac{3}{2})^2

Apply the same to y

[x + \frac{3}{2}]^2+ [y^2+ \frac{4}{3}y +(\frac{4}{6})^2 ] =- \frac{19}{9}+ (\frac{3}{2})^2 +(\frac{4}{6})^2

[x + \frac{3}{2}]^2+ [y +\frac{4}{6}]^2 =- \frac{19}{9}+ (\frac{3}{2})^2 +(\frac{4}{6})^2

[x + \frac{3}{2}]^2+ [y +\frac{4}{6}]^2 =- \frac{19}{9}+ \frac{9}{4} +\frac{16}{36}

Add the fractions

[x + \frac{3}{2}]^2+ [y +\frac{4}{6}]^2 =\frac{-19 * 4 + 9 * 9 + 16 * 1}{36}

[x + \frac{3}{2}]^2+ [y +\frac{4}{6}]^2 =\frac{21}{36}

[x + \frac{3}{2}]^2+ [y +\frac{4}{6}]^2 =\frac{7}{12}

[x + \frac{3}{2}]^2+ [y +\frac{2}{3}]^2 =\frac{7}{12}

Recall that:

(x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2 = r^2

By comparison:

r^2 =\frac{7}{12}

Take square roots of both sides

r =\sqrt{\frac{7}{12}}

Split

r =\frac{\sqrt 7}{\sqrt 12}

Rationalize

r =\frac{\sqrt 7*\sqrt 12}{\sqrt 12*\sqrt 12}

r =\frac{\sqrt {84}}{12}

r =\frac{\sqrt {4*21}}{12}

r =\frac{2\sqrt {21}}{12}

r =\frac{\sqrt {21}}{6}

Solving (b): The center

Recall that:

(x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2 = r^2

Where

r = radius

(h,k) =center

From:

[x + \frac{3}{2}]^2+ [y +\frac{2}{3}]^2 =\frac{7}{12}

-h = \frac{3}{2} and -k = \frac{2}{3}

Solve for h and k

h = -\frac{3}{2} and k = -\frac{2}{3}

Hence, the center is:

Center = (-\frac{3}{2}, -\frac{2}{3})

Aaron has 7/8 gallon of bottled water.How many 3/6 gallon servings can he pour
Anettt [7]
7/8 + 3/6 = 10/14 = 5/7 = 0.71 And if you want to make it a whole number, you multiply by 100 and you should get 71 as a whole number. Therefore: he can pour 71 gallon servings of bottled water. I hope this is helpful!!^_^!!

What can you divide a2b5 by to get a quotient of 1?
Kitty [74]

9514 1404 393

Answer:

  a^2b^5

Step-by-step explanation:

Anything divided by itself is 1.

That is, anything multiplied by its reciprocal is 1. This value (the reciprocal of the expression) is called the "multiplicative inverse." Its value is that the product of an expression and its multiplicative inverse is 1, the multiplicative identity element. (Anything times 1 is itself.)

So, to get 1 as a product, multiply by 1/(a^2b^5), which is to say, divide by a^2b^5 to get 1 as a quotient.

You need to cover the playground of a child development center with mulch. the playground is 125 feet long and 60 feet wide. you
kirill [66]
The answer is 139 cubic yards

This mulch will be of cylindrical shape.
The volume (V) of a cylinder is:
V = l · w · h           (l - length, w - width, h - height (in our example, height = depth)

It is known:
l = 125 feet
w = 60 feet
h = 6 inches = 0.5 feet

V = l · w · h = 125 · 60 · 0.5 = 3750 feet³

Since 1 cubic foot is 0.037 cubic yards, 3750 cubic feet are 139 cubic yards:
0.037 ·  3750 feet³ = 138.75 cubic yards ≈ 139 cubic yards
