Pollution refers to the presence or introduction of contaminants in the natural environment (air, water, or soil) which produce adverse effects on the environment.

Pollution can produce negative effects on environment as well as on humans.  

It reduces the efficiency of natural systems and thus reduces the carrying capacity of the environment.

Decreased efficiency also reduces the number of natural resources available.

For example, the introduction of oxides of sulfur and nitrogen into the air decreases the quality of air. It leads to the production of acid rain which produces negative effects on humans, crops, and soil.
