Meiosis is a type of cell division that reduces the number of chromosomes in the parent cell by half and produces four gamete cells. This process is required to produce egg and sperm cells for sexual reproduction.

Answer: formation of daughter cells, sexual reproduction and genetic variation

Explanation:meiosis occurs in the reproductive cells of plants and animals.in meiosis the number of chromosomes of the parent cell is reduced to half in the daughter cell.this is referred to as reduction of diploid (2n) to haploid(n).it usually involves two sets of division- meiosis I and meiosis II.

At the end of meiosis, four daughter cells are formed from one parent cell, each with half the number of chromosomes.if meiosis does not occur, the fusion of gametes would form doubling of the number of chromosomes in successive generations.

During meiosis, there is a random arrangement of chromatids in the equators of the cells.this can lead to new genetic combination and variation.
