Harry Harlow was a psychologist from Iowa, USA. He did a series of controversial experiments with Rhesus monkeys between 1957 and 1963. this experiments were aimed at studying the mother-child relationship, and the effect of child separation early on in life, He hypothesized that there is a relationship between mother and child, beyond just providing food and that CONTACT COMFORT is a key component of this relationship, so, the absence of it, for example in contact-less nurseries, it led to psychological stress and the inability to interact with the environment. One experiment involved creating surrogate mothers for the infants, made out of wires, one was bare-wired and the other was cloth-covered, the infants show a preference for the clothed one, even when the food was provided by the bare wired one. Other experiment showed that the surrogate mother was a key factor for the infants when exploring the surroundings, they would come back to the mother when frightened and go explore again. When there wasn't a surrogate mother present, the infants would not explore and developed fear and habits like huddling and thumb sucking.
