The Supreme Court case that set the stage in years of racial inequality and segregation for African Americans in the United States was the Dred Scott case.
Before the Civil War in the United States, the case of Dred Scott v. Sanford set a negative precedent to abolitionism that was demanded by people in the northern states. Scott had lived in a free state, then moved to slavery stated and argued that having lived in a free state allowed him to claim his liberty. But the Supreme Court decision was different. The Courts decided that no African American could be a United States Citizen, no matter if he/she was free or slave. So they were not able to ask for freedom.
