The Molasses Act of 1733 was a preventive measure as it enforced heavy tax to be levied on molasses imported by American colonies from anywhere other than Britain. Molasses was important for making rum and therefore higher demand in American colonies. Smuggling originated directly from the Molasses Act, and followed by its substitution from the Sugar Act. In fact, it was the skill of the American at smuggling which led to the creation of the first navy during the American Revolution.
