Because without freedom of speech anyone could be taken to jail for simply saying something someone in power didn't like. You do not have any freedom or the liberty to do something without expressing yourself. You do not have life or any happiness when you cannot truly be and express yourself.

Essentially, your vote counts - no matter who you are - in democracy. In feudalism, only the important people vote - like a Count.
