At the end of microbiology lab, you decide to practice your Gram-staining skills. The teaching assistant has no fresh cultures b

ut says you may use a plate she prepared several weeks ago. You find the correct plate in the refrigerator (labeled B.s. for Bacillus subtilis) and note that the colonies appear raised, dull, and wrinkled. This is just as you recall, so you get to work. After staining, you examine your slide under oil immersion and see that the cells are stained pink. What most likely accounts for this coloring?

Answer:

Loss of cell wall integrity or

Explanation:

Grams staining i a staining method used to classify bacteria into two main classes. Gram positive and Gram negative.

They are differentiated according to the ability of their cell wall to retain the primary stain color of the crystal violet stain or the counter stain pink.

Bacillus subtilis is a Gram positive bacteria hence it is supposed to stain purple.

Therefore, when it stained pink is an error. it shows loss of the cell wall integrity due to old age, overdecolorization or over fixing with heat.

Which qualities describe the entire open-ocean zone? Check all that apply. few nutrients
uysha [10]

Answer:

- few nutrients

- high pressure

- low temperatures

Explanation:

1. Few nutrients: open-ocean zone is located way far from the land, which is the main source of the essential nutrients.

2. High pressure: pressure increases by 1 atmosphere for every 10 meters increase in depth.

3. Ample sunlight: a large fraction of the sunlight is reflected back to the atmosphere from the sea surface.

4. Varying salinity: below the thermocline, the water is isolated from the atmosphere so the salinity remains stable over the year.

5. Low temperatures: the temperature of open-ocean zone ranges from a low of -2°C to an average of 17°C.

Which function is performed by Earth's magnetic field?
mafiozo [28]

Answer:

D. Ultraviolet rays from the sun are prevented from reaching Earth.

surface.

Explanation:

What little is known is that the Earth's magnetic field creates the so-called "magnetic shield" that provides protection against some other dangerous forms of radiation, namely cosmic rays and solar wind.

While there is no danger of losing the Earth's gravitational field, the Earth's magnetic field is declining faster than any other geophysical phenomenon. This continuous loss of the Earth's magnetic field, and the associated increase in harmful radiation, are beyond human control.
