It was called triangular because if you traced the route on a map it literally would look like a triangle. The most notable instance of this was the Slave trade  , starting off in Europe with materials and goods being shipped to Africa where slave traders would also bring along slaves which were then transported to the colonies where they were sold, then sugar and other expensive commodities were shipped back to Europe from North America
