The right answers are:

  • John Brown + wanted to establish an abolitionist republic. Brown is a famous abolitionist that lived around the early and middle 1800s. According to him the only way to finish slavery could be achieved through armed conflicts. However, this increased the tension between North and South and supported the idea of the Civil War.
  • Dred Scott + sued for his freedom. In this case, the Supreme Court of the United States decided to deny the citizenship and freedom to Dred Scott and decided to leave him as a slave. The decision of the Court only increased the popular discomfort and the tension between North and South around slavery.
  • Harriet Tubman + Underground Railroad. Harriet Tubman was a former slave that escaped and helped others to escape as well, using a system known as the Underground Railroad. It has this name because it was a secret code and not because it was an actual subway. The slaves would use secret codes related to the Railroad in order to fin safe places to hide.
  • American Plan + Clay's plan to end sectionalism. Henry Clay was a member of the Whig party that tried to create a National bank owned by the federal government and private bankers. However, his planned was never put in practice because he was never elected as president.
  • Abraham Lincoln + won 1860 presidential election. In 1860 Lincoln was elected as president and decided to promote anti-slavery policies. However, the Southern states quickly secede from the Union and elected and declared Jefferson Davis as their president.
  • Fort Sumter + surrender began civil war. The Fort Sumter siege was the last conflict of the Civil War and it took place in the Fort Sumter, South Carolina. After this event, the Confederate States surrendered and came back to the union and control of the federal government.
  • Lecompton fraud + pro-slavery constitution in Kansas. This was the Constitution of Kansas and tried to protect the economic interest of the slave-holders and to stop any abolitionist policy. However, the Constitution was not approved in the elections by the popular vote nor the House of Representatives.

How were homesteaders' lives affected by the fact that the plains were largely treeless?
Elza [17]

To build a sod house, you needed the right kind of grass — grass that had densely packed roots that would hold the soil together. So, Nebraska settlers would search for fields of buffalo grass, little blue stem, wire grass, prairie cord grass, Indian grass, and wheat grass. The next task was to cut the sod into bricks.
