Winston is educated through torture.

Big Brother uses several different techniques to torture Winston (isolation, fear, etc.) but the effect is the same. Winston is broken, and he betrays all personal loyalty he once felt. This is seen when he begs O'Brien to give Julia to the rats.

After being mentally and emotionally broken, Winston is re-educated to love Big Brother.
