The Greeks valued hospitality - while enemies sought out peace, the Greeks offered hospitality, however the Cyclops still came as nasty visitors.

The ancient Greeks were a cultured, civilized people. They valued hospitality and loyalty above all else. The value of hospitality can be seen as Ulysses and his men stop on various islands on their journey back to Ithaca. The ancient Greeks always treated their guests, invited or accidental, with respect. They offered food, a place to rest, and gifts. Ancient Greeks apparently believed that welcoming strangers pleased Jove, the god of travel and hospitality.

The Cyclops did not fear or worship any god. Polyphemus, the son of Neptune, did not hold the same values as the people of the civilized world. He rejected hospitality in favor of showing violence towards the Greeks who wandered onto his land.
