The Second Great Awakening caused a wave of religious movement and beliefs. Those involved, especially women, began reform movements to include abolition, temperance, prison reform, immigration reform.

The Seneca Falls Convention was a meeting of women interested in advancing rights and gaining the right to vote. The suffrage movement grew out of the reforms of the Second Great Awakening. The women in attendance created the Declaration of Sentiments which declared the reasons why women should be granted the right to vote.

The Gold Rush caused many to migrate West in hopes of finding gold. However, many were unable to find gold and with a lack of settlement, resources were scarce. The West had Asian immigrants in addition to blacks, Irish, and Mexicans were all living together. The lack of settlement resulted in few rules or institutions to support the area.

<span>After Mexico obtained independence from Spain they invited people from the United States to settle the land now known as Texas. The reason was to displace the Indian population which had been a serious problem. The settlers were under the laws of Mexico but since they became the predominant population they sought independence from Mexico which later resulted in war. In 1845 the US congress voted to annex and make a state of the territory.</span>
