The Battle of Guadalcanal was the first major offensive carried out by the Allies in the Pacific War after the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Midway. It was a watershed for the allies at the turn of the war against Japan. The Allies intended to use Guadalcanal as a base to launch future campaigns in the South Pacific and conquer, or neutralize, the main Japanese base in Rabaul, New Britain.
