Progressives wanted to take an activist role in society because they opposed the laissez-faire approach of the Gilded Age. Progressives believed human beings and governments could harness the power of science to improve the human condition. This led to policies informed by governmental regulation, scientific innovation and human oriented policies designed to improve the human condition.
