HIV infects CD4+ white blood cells. It then makes copies of itself and destroys the blood cell it infected.  New viral particles are released, and the new virus find more CD4+ cells to infect. Therefore, someone with uncontrolled HIV that has developed into AIDS can have a very low count of white blood cells.

These cells, also called T helper cells, are very important in coordinating and helping the immune system to function. Without them, the body succumbs to infection and disease.
