Here is an explanation using an example.
You are asked to multiply 4.88 by 3.12 by long multiplication.
You get the number 152256 before you place the decimal point.

Now by estimation, you see that 4.88 is close to 5, and 3.12 is close to 3.
Since 5 * 3 = 15, you know that 4.88 times 3.12 must be close to 15.

You look again at your long division result, 152256, and you know the decimal point must be placed between the 5 and the 2 because that makes the product 15.2256 which is close to 15.

If you place the decimal point in any other position, and you answer 1.52256, 152.256, 1522.56, 15225.6, or 152256, the answer is incorrect because none of those answers are as close to 15 as 15.2256 is. The estimated answer of 15 helped you place the decimal point in the correct place.

A box of national brand cornflakes is $2.09 for 12 ounces. A box of store label cornflakes is $3.09 for 20 ounces.
grin007 [14]

Answer:

A)

  • National brand cornflakes is 0.174 = .17/oz
  • Store label cornflakes is 0.514 = .15/oz

B) The larger box is cheaper per ounce.

C) 2.09 – .30 = 1.79 for 12 ounces. So than $1.79/12= .15/oz.

They  would both be the same so there would be no better deal.

The solution is y = -5

What is Quadratic Equation?

A quadratic equation is a second-order polynomial equation in a single variable x , ax² + bx + c = 0. with a ≠ 0. Because it is a second-order polynomial equation, the fundamental theorem of algebra guarantees that it has at least one solution. The solution may be real or complex.

Given data ,

Let the function be f ( x ) = y

And , y = x² + 2x - 8

So , f ( x ) = x² + 2x - 8

Substituting the value for x in the equation , we get

When x = -3

f ( -3 ) = ( -3 )² + 2( -3 ) - 8

         = 9 - 6 - 8

         = 9 - 14

f ( -3 ) = -5

When x = 1

f ( 1 ) = ( 1 )² + 2( 1 ) - 8

       = 1 + 2 - 8

       = 3 - 8

f ( 1 ) = -5

Hence , the value of y = -5
