Answer:

It was common for both armies (Union and Confederate) to hold their rivals in the prisons until the war gets to its end. It's estimate that during the Civil War in America about 400,000 Union and Confederate soldiers held prisoner at different prison sites. Andersonville became one of the famous prisons where Confederate military men were held as prisoners. Approximately 56,000 died in captivity in prison because of the injuries, disease, poor sanitation, overcrowding, and malnutrition.
