The 1955 Freedom Charter was a statement of the core principles of the South African National Congress. The charter was adopted, officially, in June of 1955 by the Congress of the People. Mandela was not able to witness the Charter being developed because he was under banning orders and living under disguise and in hiding from the police at that time of the Charter's full development and review.
