1. How was Louis Fritsche, mayor of New Ulm, affected by World War I?

New Ulm was a city founded by German Immigrants and many residents of the city maintained close ties to Germany. When the US entered into war with Germany, the mayor of New Ulm was Dr. Louis Fritsche, he feared that many young German Americans men would be obliged to fight against Germany in the war. Because of this Fritsche was charged with “promoting and participating in seditious public meetings” and was suspended from office.

2. Name two ways that Minnesotans contributed to the war effort in World War I?

More than 300.000 Minnesotans served in the war. They were in Europe, Africa, the Pacific and in the US. Also, Minnesotans helped in the WWI by buying war bonds helping the government finance military operations and other expenditures.

3. Describe the experiences of soldiers during World War I. Provide at least two examples.

In WWI soldiers experienced new weaponry technology, this caused a great number of casualties and rose the number of deaths because machine guns were used in the war and this made possible to kill more people at one time, poison gas and tanks were also introduced into WWI.

To protect themselves, soldiers dig into trenches, which became the symbol of the war. Until today pictures of soldiers inside trenches are famous. There they tried to protect themselves from cold, wind, rain, snow.

Historians say that 60 million soldiers from many countries of the world served in WWI.
