Relying on a subset of the performance equation (cpu execution time is the only valid comparison data), one could select the low

er performing processor while they are requiring the higher performing design. for this question, here are the two processors. p1 has a clock rate of 3.0 ghz, average cpi of 1.60, and requires execution of 4.2 x 10^9 instructions. p2 has a clock rate of 3.5 ghz, and average cpi of 2.00 and requires 4.0 x 10^9 instructions. based on cpu execution time, the only valid comparison, which processor is faster?

Time for p1 to execute the instructions is
.. (4.2*10⁹ i)*(1.6 c/i)/(3.0*10⁹ c/s) = 2.24 s

Time for p2 to execute the instructions is
.. (4.0*10⁹ i)*(2.00 c/i)/(3.5*10⁹ c/s) = 2.29 s

Processor p1 is faster by about 2%.

The City Housing Authority has received 50 applications from qualified applicants for eight low-income apartments. Three of the
OlgaM077 [116]
The probability that both specific qualified applicants will be among the eight selected is given by:
P(2\ specified)=\frac{2C2\times 48C6}{50C8}=0.0229
The probability that the two will get apartments on the North side is given by:
P(North)=\frac{3C2\times5C0}{8C2}=0.107
The probability that the two will get apartments on the South side is given by:
P(South)=\frac{5C2\times3C0}{8C2}=0.357
The events '2 apartments on North side' and '2 apartments on South side' are mutually exclusive. Therefore the probability the two specific qualified applicants will be on the same side of town is 0.107 + 0.357 = 0.464.
Finally, the probability that two specific qualified applicants will be selected for apartments on the same side of town is found from:
0.0229\times0.464=0.01063
