This means that nations were willing to use force to expand their interest or for national security.
Nationalism is an ideology and movement that promotes the interests of a particular nation especially with the aim of gaining and maintaining the nation's sovereignty over its homeland. The love of one's country or homeland ran high during these times and people were willing to defend the pride of their nation no matter the cost which is why these nations were so willing to go to war.

But russia felt responsible to be the protector of all slavic people which came to serbia's aid and declared war on Austria hungary. Which forced germany to declare war on russia and so on.
