In 1895, a German physicist named Wilhelm Roentgen was conducting experiments with vacuum tubes, which he kept completely closed

off from light, when he noticed that some sort of radiation was escaping the apparatus. He eventually realized that his vacuum tubes could produce radiation that was able to pass through many different objects including human tissues. He used this unknown type of radiation to produce a picture of his wife's hand.
