1. Cotton Gin - A machine invented by Eli Whitney in 1793 which could quickly and easily separate cotton fibers from seeds. Using a cotton gin, workers could clean 50 times as much cotton.

2. Interchangeable Parts are a part of a machine or device that can be replaced by another, identical part. This was invented by Eli Whitney and changed manufacturing forever because now people could replace a broken part in an item easily.

3. A patent is a document which shows sole legal right to an invention and its profits. Congress passed the law in 1790 and it protected inventors’ rights.

4. The Spinning Jenny was invented in 1764 by James Hargreaves and was a multi-spindle spinning frame. It reduced the amount of work needed to make cloth and was a key development in the industrialization of weaving.

5. The water frame was invented in 1767 by Richard Arkwright and was a water wheel powered spinning frame, which was designed for the production of cotton threads. It ran on water and thus produced stronger and harder yarn than the Spinning Jenny.

6. Capitalism is an economic system in which people and companies own the means of production. This means that the owners of a business or property decide themselves how to use it.

7. Free enterprise was a type of economy in which people are free to buy, sell, or produce whatever they want. Business owners make and produce only products that they think will sell the best, and what they have resources for.

8. Capital is money or other items, such as machines or buildings, used to create wealth. The people control it, not the government.

9. The Lowell Factory System was created by Francis Cabot Lowell in 1814 in his Massachusetts textile factory. The new system combined all the manufacturing steps for an item in one place.

10. There were many environmental issues with the situation in factories during the Industrial Revolution, such as smoke stacks from steam engine powered factories releasing smoke and pollution into the air.

11. The flying shuttle was one of the key developments in weaving during the Industrial Revolution because it allowed a single weaver to weave much wider fabrics, and could also be mechanized.

12. Factories were a development during the Industrial Revolution that was good and bad because it increased jobs but also took cottage workers’ jobs away from them.

13. Urbanization was a key development during the Industrial Revolution when many people flocked to cities to work in the textile factories there. Cities grew in size with this development, while more rural areas decreased in size.
