The Second Great Awakening caused a wave of religious movement and beliefs. Those involved, especially women, began reform movements to include abolition, temperance, prison reform, immigration reform.

The Seneca Falls Convention was a meeting of women interested in advancing rights and gaining the right to vote. The suffrage movement grew out of the reforms of the Second Great Awakening. The women in attendance created the Declaration of Sentiments which declared the reasons why women should be granted the right to vote.

The Gold Rush caused many to migrate West in hopes of finding gold. However, many were unable to find gold and with a lack of settlement, resources were scarce.
