Before the English colonists settled in Carolina, Lords of England received land grants in North America from King Charles II.

With those grants, those lords decided to establish a proprietary settlement. To do so, they had some representatives that studied many systems of plantations, including the sugar plantation system on the Caribbean island of Barbados. With that, they transported the Barbarian system to Carolina including the use of slavery.
