It is better to be a Roman Slave. While lower caste indians or "Untouchables" were usually free, they were outcasts from society and were marked as dirty people that must never be touched. The roman slaves, though subjected to harsh labor and possible death, were given the option of freedom if they work for it. Slaves would sometimes be able to become soldiers and work for freedom that way while others might become free due to a sympathetic owner. The tax imposed by the crown was actually lower than than taxes paid in England. The problem was we were not consulted or given a voice on the issue. The King tried to pass it off so that later on other taxes imposed on the colonies could be done without consent because we didn't argue about having a tax lowered.
Pure and simple it was a way to impose control without consent.

The Cold War brought fear into practically everyone. Everyone was second guessing their friends, families, neighbors, even bosses to being Communist spies. The fear of someone, even in the government, being a spy wreaked havoc in society. Television began broadcasting commercials of what to do if your neighbor is a spy, there were advertisements in the paper, you couldn't go anywhere without being reminded of the Cold War. No Russian was trusted at this time. Not to mention there was the fear of a nuclear attack. There were fallout shelters made in people's homes, schools, and community gathering places. Cartoons were made for children to teach them what they should do if a nuclear warhead were to hit. It was basically Hell.
