He took part in the battle of San Jacinto, and soon after became secretary of war in the interim government of the Republic of Texas.
In the same year he became the Vice President of Sam Houston.
Two years later he became president for a three-year term.

because it would only imply that there rights that government does not protect
and that it would be a hindrance that would oppose the power of
government. It was only when he added
the amendments he made that he changed his mind.
