For example:  

Look at the following words:  Hyperactive, Active, Energetic  

Although the above three words mean same, but when used in a sentence, the meaning implied is different from the literal dictionary meaning and can connote negative, positive or neutral feeling

Hyperactive has a negative connotation whereas energetic has positive connotation.  The word “Active” has neutral connotation.
