Do you know how to find valence electrons? The amount of valence electrons that an element has depends on its group number, with an exception towards transitional elements.

For example, Oxygen is in group 16, which makes it have 6 valence electrons. Group 1 has 1, group 2 has 2, group 13 has 3, group 14 has 4, and so on.

What about transitional elements? The elements ranging from group 3 until 11 have different valence electrons because (advanced) if you look at their electron configuration, they have d orbital electrons (they can be edited), which gives them a varied valence configuration.

1. Iodine: Group 17 - 7 valence electrons Calcium: Group 2 - 2 valence electrons Chlorine: Group 17 - 7 valence electrons Sodium - Group 1 - 1 valence electron Neon - Group 18 - 8 valence electrons Copper - Group 11 - *Copper is a transitional element!* Those within group 11 usually have either 1 or 2 electrons. Your teacher did not specify which copper he's asking, so you could say that there is Copper (I), which has 1 valence electron, and also Copper (II), which has 2 valence electrons.

Moving to your second question, to see how many electron shells an element has, you look at where they are in their period (horizontal row)

For example, oxygen is in period 2, therefore, it has two electron shells. Period 1 has 1, period 2 has 2, period 3 has 3, and so on.

1. 1. Iodine: Period 5 - 5 electron shells                                                            Calcium: Period 4 - 4 electron shells                                                                         Chlorine: Period 3 - 3 electron shells                                                                        Sodium - Period 3- 1 electron shells                                                                           Neon - Period 2 - 2 electron shells                                                                        Copper - Period 4  - 4 electron shells

The pH of a solution is 2.0. Which statement is correct?
Natalka [10]

Answer:

The relationship of pH and concentration of H+ ion is pH = -lg[H+]. So the concentration of H+ is 10^(-2). And [OH-][H+]=10^(-14). pOH + pH = 14. So the right answer is A.

An analytical chemist is titrating of a solution of ammonia with a solution of . The of ammonia is . Calculate the pH of the bas
harina [27]

Answer: The question has some details missing. here is the complete question ; An analytical chemist is titrating 88.4 mL of a 0.2700 M solution of ammonia (NH3 with a 0.4300 M solution of HNO3. The pK, of ammonia is 4.74 Calculate the pH of the base solution after the chemist has added 66.3 mL of the HNO3 solution to it . Note for advanced students: you may assume the final volume equals the initial volume of the solution plus the volume of HNO3 solution

Explanation:

Given ;

  • number of moles of base = 88.4 x 0.2700 = 23.868
  • number of moles of acid = 0.4300 x 66.3 = 28.509
  • This was after the equivalence point, as such net moles of acid = 28.509 - 23.868 = 4.641mol
  • total volume of solution = 88.4 + 66.3 = 154.7mL
  • Concentration of Acid = moles/volume = 4.641/154.7 = 0.03M
  • From pH = -log[H^+] = -Log[0.03]
  • pH = 1.52

Find the volume. mass is 9.75 g and the density is 15.6 g/cm3
Leni [432]

Answer:

1.6cm3

Explanation:

density = mass/volume

15.6g/cm3= 9.75 g/volume

15.6/9.75 = volume

1.6cm3 = volume

Petrolyn motor oil is a combination of natural oil and synthetic oil.
it contains 8 liters of natural oil for every 5 liters of synthetic oil.
natural oil / synthetic oil
8 / 5
let x= liters of synthetic oil and
728-x = liters of natural oil
8/5 = 728-x/x ,  8x = 5 (728-x)
8x = 3640-5x
8x+5x = 3640
13x = 3640
x = 280 litres
280 liters of synthetic oil is needed to make 728 liters of petrolyn oil.
